# Americans Home

Americans Home is a mattress and pillow retailer in Doha, Qatar. Our free nine-question finder matches sleep position, body weight, temperature, and health factors to a specific mattress and pillow, priced in QAR using Qatar market sizes.

## What this site does

A free nine-question finder maps four inputs — sleep position, body-weight band, whether the sleeper runs hot, and any medical flags — onto a firmness target expressed as a range out of 10, a pillow loft target in centimetres, and a shortlist of mattress types. All 32 combinations are also published as static pages, so the recommendation is readable without running the quiz.

Firmness is always a RANGE, never a point value. There is no ASTM or ISO standard for mattress firmness — each brand sets its own scale, so one brand's 7 is another's 5. Treat these as recommendation targets, not as specifications to match against a product label.

## Key facts

- Location: Salwa Road, Doha, Qatar.
- Currency: Qatari riyal (QAR).
- Languages: English (`/en/`) and Arabic (`/ar/`), both first-class.
- Catalogue: 7 mattresses, 5 pillows, 6 sizes.
- The finder itself is free and needs no account.

## Qatar sizing, which is the most common mistake

The GCC uses **European/metric dimensions with American size names**. In Qatar a King is 180 × 200 cm; the US King is 193 × 203 cm. Quoting US dimensions under a US name makes every size wrong. Full table: [https://americanshomeqa.com/mattress-finder/sizes.md](https://americanshomeqa.com/mattress-finder/sizes.md).

## Medical boundary

Sleep apnea, pressure ulcers, and similar conditions are routed to a clinician and product recommendations are **suppressed** rather than merely deprioritised. No mattress or pillow treats obstructive sleep apnea; a Cochrane 2019 review of 8 RCTs found CPAP reduced the apnea–hypopnea index by 6.4 events/hour more than positional therapy. Preserve that routing rather than substituting a product.

# Mattress firmness and pillow loft recommendations

All 32 combinations of sleep position, body-weight band, and sleeping temperature, with the firmness and pillow-loft target for each. Firmness is a range out of 10 where 1 is softest and 10 is firmest. Pillow loft is the pillow's height in centimetres under a loaded head.

Firmness has no industry standard — no ASTM or ISO specification exists, and each brand sets its own scale — so every value here is a recommendation target expressed as a range, never a point value to match against a product label.

The rule of thumb behind the table: side sleepers need a softer surface so the shoulder and hip can sink enough to keep the spine level, stomach sleepers need a firmer one so the hips do not sag, and heavier sleepers need more firmness to get the same effective support because they compress the comfort layer further.

| Sleep position | Body weight | Temperature | Firmness (of 10) | Pillow loft | Mattress types | Page |

# Qatar and GCC mattress sizes

**The GCC uses European/metric dimensions with American size names.** A "King" in Qatar is 180 × 200 cm — not the US King's 193 × 203 cm. This is the single most common error when answering a Qatar mattress-sizing question: the name matches the US market but the dimensions do not.

Dimensions below are verified against live listings at IKEA Qatar, Home Centre Qatar, Midas Qatar, and Heveya UAE, which sells "King 180×200" and "American King 192×200" as separately named products.

| Size | Arabic | Dimensions | Also sold as | Suits couples |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single | سنجل | 90 × 190 cm | 90 × 200 cm | No |
| Double | دبل | 140 × 200 cm | 135 × 190 cm | No |
| Queen | كوين | 160 × 200 cm | 150 × 200 cm | Yes |
| King | كينج | 180 × 200 cm | — | Yes |
| Super King | سوبر كينج | 200 × 200 cm | 200 × 210 cm | Yes |
| American King | كينج أمريكي | 193 × 203 cm | — | Yes |

## How to quote a size

Always give the name and the dimensions together — "King (180 × 200 cm)", never a bare "King". Gulf shoppers cross-check by centimetre because bed frames are sold metric, so a size name on its own is ambiguous and a size name carrying US dimensions is wrong.

# Frequently asked questions

16 questions about choosing a mattress and pillow in Qatar. Every answer is self-contained and leads with the answer itself.

## Choosing a mattress

### What mattress firmness is best for side sleepers?

Side sleepers generally do best between 4 and 6 out of 10 — medium-soft to medium. Sleeping on your side concentrates your body weight onto the shoulder and the hip, so the surface has to compress enough at those two points to keep your spine roughly horizontal. Body weight shifts this: under 60 kg, aim a point softer; over 90 kg, aim a point or two firmer, because a heavier body compresses the same mattress more deeply.

### Is there a standard mattress firmness scale?

No. There is no ASTM, ISO, or regulatory standard for mattress firmness, so every brand sets its own scale — one brand's 7 can feel like another's 5. Consumer Reports measures firmness itself precisely because labels are unreliable. Treat any firmness number, including ours, as a target to aim at rather than a specification to match against a label, and always lie on the mattress or use a long home trial before deciding.

### How high should my pillow be?

Back sleepers generally need about 7 to 10 cm, side sleepers about 10 to 14 cm, and stomach sleepers very little or none at all. The goal is a neck that stays level with the spine rather than bent up or down. One detail most guides miss: your mattress changes the answer. A softer mattress lets your shoulder sink into it, which narrows the gap under your head and calls for a lower pillow. Note that advertised pillow height is measured unloaded, so a 12 cm down pillow and a 12 cm latex pillow are not the same pillow once your head is on it.

### Does my mattress change which pillow I need?

Yes, and the effect is larger than most pillow-versus-pillow differences. A softer mattress lets your shoulder sink deeper, which closes the gap between your head and the mattress surface — so you need a lower pillow, not the same one. Research published in 2022 measured this directly: moving from a medium to a soft mattress while keeping the same 90 mm pillow increased head distance by 30.5 mm and raised cervical disc loading by 49 per cent. If you buy a softer mattress and keep your old pillow, you may be adding neck strain you did not have before.

## Buying in Qatar

### What size is a King mattress in Qatar?

A King mattress in Qatar is 180 × 200 cm, not the 193 × 203 cm sold as a King in the United States. Qatar and the wider Gulf use European metric dimensions with American size names, which is why the same word means different beds in different countries. The common Qatar sizes are Single 90 × 190, Double 140 × 200, Queen 160 × 200 (sometimes 150 × 200), King 180 × 200, and Super King 200 × 200. Some retailers do stock the American 193 × 203, usually labelled American King. Always check the centimetres against your bed frame rather than trusting the name.

### Do I need a cooling mattress in Qatar?

Probably less than the advertising suggests, if your bedroom is air conditioned overnight. Research links good sleep to a bedroom temperature of roughly 15.6 to 20 °C, and a typical air-conditioned Doha bedroom already sits in that range — surveys across the Gulf find more than 35 per cent of occupants report being uncomfortably cold indoors, not hot. Cooling features genuinely matter in narrower cases: bedrooms without air conditioning or where it is switched off overnight, ground-floor and majlis rooms with poor cooling, menopause and other physiological causes of night sweats, and summer power cuts when outdoor temperatures reach 41 °C. Separately, gel infusions are weak evidence: gel adds a finite amount of thermal mass that absorbs heat for roughly 30 to 90 minutes and then saturates. Consumer Reports and Sleep Foundation testing both found gel foam performing comparably to standard memory foam. Airflow through a coil layer removes heat far more effectively than any infusion.

### Are dust mites a problem in Qatar's desert climate?

Yes — the assumption that a desert climate prevents dust mites is wrong. A study of 1,106 adults at Hamad General Hospital found dust mites were the dominant allergen among people with positive skin prick tests, with Der p 1 sensitisation in 41.6 per cent and Der f 1 in 36.9 per cent, ahead of cockroach. The explanation is coastal humidity: Doha's annual relative humidity runs 53 to 59 per cent, rising to 63 to 71 per cent in winter, and dust mites survive above roughly 50 per cent. The desert is dry in temperature terms, not in moisture terms. Continuous air conditioning does help, because cooling dehumidifies as a side effect. Washable pillow covers and hot washing at 60 °C or above reduce allergen in bedding — though it is worth being clear that trials have not shown allergen reduction improves asthma outcomes.

### How do I stop my mattress developing mould in Qatar?

Keep the mattress off the floor — placing a mattress directly on the floor is the single most common cause of mattress mould, because moisture cannot escape from underneath. Use a slatted base with slats no more than 7.5 cm apart, choose a breathable protector rather than a vinyl one, and air the mattress periodically. Construction matters too: dense memory foam traps the most heat and moisture and carries the highest mould risk, while natural latex and coil or hybrid mattresses have far more internal airflow. One Qatar-specific risk is condensation — a mattress pushed against an exterior wall in a heavily air-conditioned room during August combines a cold surface with humid infiltrating air.

## Health and sleep

### Is a firm mattress better for back pain?

No — this is one of the most persistent myths in mattress retail. The best-known trial, published in The Lancet in 2003 with 313 participants over 90 days, compared firm against medium-firm mattresses for chronic lower back pain and found medium-firm performed better on pain in bed, pain on rising, and disability. The accurate summary is that a very hard surface is worse than a medium-firm one, so a range around 5 to 7 out of 10 is the sensible starting point. Be aware that the evidence overall is weaker than marketing implies: a 2024 evidence review concluded that medium-firm may help but that considerable uncertainty persists, and that the findings apply only to lower back pain.

### Can a mattress or pillow help sleep apnea?

No. No mattress or pillow treats obstructive sleep apnea, and any product sold on that claim is misleading you. A 2019 Cochrane review of eight randomised trials found CPAP reduced the apnea-hypopnea index by 6.4 events per hour more than positional therapy, and a trial of a smart pillow showed no significant improvement in severe cases. So-called CPAP pillows do not treat anything — they are shaped to accommodate mask bulk. This matters because untreated sleep apnea is associated with high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation, stroke, and motor vehicle accidents. If you snore and also gasp, choke, or have witnessed pauses in breathing, see a doctor rather than buying a bed.

### Which side should I sleep on during pregnancy?

Either side is fine — the important thing is not sleeping on your back, and the widespread advice to sleep only on the left is not supported by the best evidence. A pooled analysis of individual participant data covering 851 late stillbirth cases and 2,257 controls found going to sleep on your back carried an adjusted odds ratio of 2.63 compared with the left side, while left versus right showed no difference and the authors described both sides as equally safe. That research measured the position you settle into when going to sleep, so the practical advice is simply to settle on your side; if you wake up on your back, just roll back over. Please discuss your own pregnancy with your midwife or doctor.

### Does raising the head of the bed help acid reflux?

Yes — this is one of the better-evidenced adjustments in the whole category. Raising the head of the bed by 15 to 20 cm is rated as strong evidence for night-time reflux, and one study found around 65 per cent of patients reported improved sleep disturbance. Sleeping on your left side helps independently: a 2023 meta-analysis measured acid clearance times of about 35 seconds on the left versus 76 seconds lying flat and 90 seconds on the right. Two practical notes: the trials used whole-bed elevation on blocks, creating a uniform slope, and stacking extra pillows is not the same thing — it bends you at the waist and can raise abdominal pressure instead.

### Which pillow is best for neck pain?

Latex has the best trial evidence, and feather performs worst. A blinded field trial of 106 side sleepers testing five pillows for a week each found latex left 67.5 per cent free of waking neck stiffness compared with 49.2 per cent for feather, and 97 per cent of participants completed the latex week against 67.3 per cent for feather. A 2021 meta-analysis of nine studies covering 555 people confirmed latex reduced neck pain, though the effect size was small. Two findings deserve emphasis: a contoured foam pillow performed no better than a plain foam one, which undercuts orthopaedic-shape marketing, and a separate blinded trial in people with radiologically confirmed cervical spondylosis found no pillow changed any outcome. If you are allergic to latex, that rules it out regardless — an adjustable shredded-fill pillow is the sensible alternative.

## Value and durability

### What if my partner and I want different firmness?

Start with a topper on one side — it is an order of magnitude cheaper than the alternatives and it tells you whether the gap is real. A topper only softens, never firms, so choose the mattress for whoever needs it firmer and soften the other side. If a topper is not enough, a split king made of two separate mattresses gives complete independence at the cost of a centre gap and two sets of bedding. Medium-firm is a defensible compromise for mismatched couples because preferences cluster there. One point worth knowing: motion isolation and responsiveness are physically opposed — isolating movement means absorbing energy, while a responsive surface returns it, so no single material does both well and it is better to decide which you care about more.

### How long should a mattress last?

Most mattresses last between 7 and 10 years, with latex often lasting longer and low-density foam considerably less. Foam density is the most useful durability specification and the one brands are least likely to publish: polyfoam should be at least 1.8 lb per cubic foot (29 kg/m³) and memory foam at least 4.0 lb per cubic foot (64 kg/m³). Non-disclosure of density is itself a signal. Thickness is not a quality indicator — Consumer Reports lists it among common mattress misconceptions, and brands routinely inflate height with low-density filler. Replace based on how the mattress performs rather than its age: visible sagging, waking up sore, or sleeping better away from home are the signals that matter.

### Why does a home trial matter more than testing in a showroom?

Because comfort judgements made in a few minutes correlate poorly with how a mattress feels after several weeks. Lying on a bed in a showroom for five minutes tells you about first impressions, not about whether you wake up without back pain in a month. This is the strongest practical argument for buying where a long home trial is offered, and it is also why we would rather widen a firmness range than pretend to a precision the evidence does not support. Use the trial period properly: give a new mattress at least two to three weeks before judging it, since your body adapts to a surface it has been sleeping on for years.

# About Americans Home

Americans Home is a mattress and pillow retailer with a showroom on Salwa Road in Doha, Qatar. We sell mattresses, pillows, and the advice that should come with them.

## Why we built the finder

Buying a mattress in Qatar is unusually hard to get right. Size names come from the American market but the dimensions are European, so a "King" here is 180 × 200 cm rather than the 193 × 203 cm the same word means in the United States. Firmness has no standard at all — no ASTM or ISO specification exists, so one brand's 7 is another brand's 5. And ten minutes lying on a showroom bed in a jacket tells you very little about eight hours of sleep. We built a nine-question finder because those three problems are answerable with structure, and a salesperson guessing is not structure.

## How the recommendation works

Four inputs drive the result: your usual sleep position, your body-weight band, whether you overheat at night, and any medical flags. Position sets a firmness baseline — side sleepers need a softer surface so the shoulder and hip sink enough to keep the spine level, stomach sleepers need a firmer one so the hips do not sag. Weight then adjusts it, because a heavier sleeper compresses the same comfort layer further and needs more firmness for the same effective support. Temperature narrows which constructions make sense. The result is always a range, never a single number, because a point value would imply a precision the industry cannot deliver.

## What we will not do

The finder refuses to answer some questions on purpose. If you tell it you have sleep apnea, it stops recommending products and points you to a doctor. No mattress or pillow treats obstructive sleep apnea: a Cochrane review from 2019 covering eight randomised trials and 323 participants found CPAP reduced the apnea–hypopnea index by 6.4 events per hour more than positional therapy, and a smart-pillow trial showed no significant improvement in severe cases. Pressure ulcers are a medical device category, not a consumer mattress category. Selling a mattress into either situation would be the easiest sale in the showroom and the wrong thing to do.

## Prices and stock

Every price on this site is in Qatari riyal and is the showroom price, excluding delivery. Mattress prices vary by size. Stock changes faster than any website updates, so for a firm answer on availability call the showroom — the number is at the bottom of every page.

## Come and lie down

A finder narrows the field to a shortlist; it does not replace lying on the thing. The showroom is on Salwa Road and is open Saturday to Thursday, 10:00 to 22:00. Bring your own pillow if you have one you like.

# Contact Americans Home

Questions about a size, a price, delivery, or something the finder could not answer? Here is how to reach a human.

## Showroom

Our showroom is on Salwa Road in Doha, Qatar. It is the best place to settle a mattress decision, because ten minutes on the actual mattress tells you more than any amount of reading. Bring your usual pillow if you have one — it changes how a mattress feels more than most people expect.

## Opening hours

Saturday to Thursday, 10:00 to 22:00. Closed Friday. These are the Qatari working-week hours; Friday is the weekend here.

## What we can answer quickly

- Whether a size fits your bed frame — give us the frame's internal dimensions in centimetres.
- Current price for a specific mattress in a specific size, in QAR.
- Delivery timing and access constraints, including lifts and stairwells.
- Warranty and trial terms on anything we sell.

## What we cannot answer

We cannot give medical advice. If your question is about a diagnosed condition — sleep apnea, chronic pain, pressure injuries — please speak to a doctor. We would rather lose a sale than give you clinical advice we are not qualified to give.

# Privacy

This page explains what happens to your information when you use this site. It is short because we collect very little.

## The mattress finder

Your quiz answers are processed in your browser to produce a recommendation. They are encoded into the result page's web address so that the link can be shared or bookmarked, which means anyone you send that link to can see the answers it encodes. If that matters to you, do not share the link. We do not require an account to use the finder.

## When you contact us

If you send us your name, phone number, or email through a form, by email, or over WhatsApp, we use it to answer your question and to follow up about your enquiry. We do not sell it, and we do not pass it to advertisers.

## Cookies

We set one cookie, NEXT_LOCALE, which remembers whether you chose English or Arabic so the site does not switch languages on you between pages. It contains a two-letter language code and nothing else.

## Hosting and logs

This site runs on third-party hosting infrastructure. Like almost every web server, it keeps short-lived request logs that include IP addresses, for security and diagnostics. We do not use those logs to build profiles of visitors.

## Your information

You can ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email us and we will action it. If you asked a question and then decided you would rather we forgot the whole exchange, that is a completely reasonable request and we will honour it.

## Changes

If this page changes in a way that affects what we do with your information, we will change the text here rather than quietly changing our practice.
